The gentle art of sleep coaching: A holistic approach for the entire family
In the busy world of parenting, where sleepless nights and exhaustion often become a rite of passage, the concept of sleep coaching has gained significant traction. Everyone acknowledges and accepts that the first few months of a baby’s life are going to be sleepless for new parents…but what happens once the 3rd trimester is over? Having a newborn that doesn’t sleep is ‘normal’, but what about when your little one is 9 months, or 12 months, or 3 years old? So often a child who doesn’t sleep well can be seen as being a ‘failure’ in parenting, and people stop talking to others about their lack of sleep for fear of being judged. Often, these parents are told to ‘just let them cry it out, that’s what I did’. This does work for some children, but not all. It also doesn’t fit with all parenting styles and family dynamics. For many parents seeking a gentle, holistic approach to improve their baby's sleep, traditional methods like cry-it-out may seem outdated and incompatible with their parenting philosophy.

Understanding the gentle, holistic sleep coaching difference:
Lullabies Sleep Coaching programme is an educational, informative app-based programme with real-time WhatsApp support and in-person visits. This contemporary approach is centred on gentleness, mindfulness, and holistic considerations that go beyond sleep for the whole family. Lullabies empowers parents to have the confidence to be their own child’s sleep coach. The holistic approach considers factors such as feeding and nutrition, weaning, health, parenting style, sibling relationships and the baby's personality. This comprehensive evaluation ensures that the sleep plan is not only effective but also made in a way that recognises parents as partners, not clients. There are many online sleep plans available to purchase online, and for some babies, these will work well. If you do decide to purchase an online, self-led programme, then remember that it may need some tweaks here and there to suit your family. If your child suffers from reflux, allergies/intolerances or was very premature, then I would recommend taking a multi-disciplinary team approach as traditional sleep training generally won’t work. I frequently signpost parents to dieticians, osteopaths, physiotherapists, or further specialist medical involvement. Unlike one-size-fits-all solutions, Lullabies recognizes the individuality of each baby and family, creating a tailored journey, not a prescribed one.
Timing Matters: The importance of developmental stages in sleep coaching:
We’ve all heard of the dreaded ‘4-month regression’. It’s a term that strikes fear into even the most seasoned of parents. Lullabies only start a sleep coaching programme after the critical 4.5-5-month milestone. This timing aligns with the significant developmental changes that are happening to your baby, including the establishment of the circadian rhythm and melatonin production. Before these changes happen, we focus on laying down solid sleep foundations and cultivating healthy habits for the entire family. The best advice to help you when your little one is undergoing any ‘regression’ (there are quite a few) is to remember to be consistent. They may need more comfort than usual from you, and that’s perfectly normal for their age and stage. Instead, remember that all your hard work on sleep and attachment won’t be undone in a few nights of regression.
The timeframe of gentle sleep coaching:
Unlike rigid timelines associated with traditional methods (for example 3-5 nights for Cry It Out or Ferber), gentle sleep coaching has a very varied timeframe. I have seen it span anywhere from three nights to ten weeks. This flexibility is rooted in the understanding that babies have unique needs, and progress may occur at different paces for each family. However fast or slow your progress is, is up to you, the speed doesn’t matter. What matters is that everyone is happy with the pace and actions taken during sleep coaching and that it aligns with your parenting ethos. As a rule of thumb, the more sleep props a baby/child has, the longer it will take to get ‘independent sleep’ (if that’s your aim). ‘Sleeping through the night’ means different things to different families. For some, it means 1 night is acceptable, for others, it means 7 pm-7 am. It’s important to know your goals, and whether they are realistic before you start any sleep coaching programme, either self-guided online or in-person support.
What makes Lullabies different?
Lullabies stands out not just for its approach to sleep coaching and breastfeeding support but also for the years of experience, education, and knowledge behind the sleep coaching programme. I am a UK trained and registered paediatric nurse with speciality qualifications in neonatal intensive care. Almost 20 years qualified as a children’s nurse and working with babies & families. Beyond basic qualifications, I have pursued advanced education and accreditation in gentle sleep coaching, colic, allergies and reflux, and antenatal maternal mental health, as well as counselling qualifications. This diverse knowledge base and experience equips me to consider sleep issues truly holistically, within the sphere of the wider family unit.
Creating Lasting Change:
The goal of Lullabies is not just to achieve short-term improvements but to introduce lasting change. By considering all the various aspects of a family's life, we work together to create an environment that supports healthy sleep for the entire family. Lullabies also believes in equipping parents to deal with future challenges they may face with their child’s sleep. Be that nap refusals, moving into a big bed, early rises…. A child’s sleep needs change gradually throughout childhood, and I believe that parents should feel competent and confident in handling these changes as a family unit, without outside intervention.
