Prioritizing Self - Principal Lisa

Prioritizing Self-Care

In the whirlwind of parenthood, it's easy to overlook the importance of self-care. Lisa Sherrington-Boyd, our resident Community Educator for parents at Mom Store, also known as Principal Lisa, urges us to ditch the stress and hatch a plan to prioritize self-care. As a seasoned expert, Lisa emphasizes that taking care of yourself isn't about 'me first' but 'me too.' Investing in your well-being lays the foundation for a positive and fulfilling parenting experience.

The Significance of Self-Care:

Lisa believes that the relationship with oneself sets the tone for all other relationships. Modeling self-care and making it a priority is a loving gift to your child. It instils a balanced approach to life, creating a foundation for their future roles as parents. We are, in essence, shaping the parents of tomorrow, just as our parents once did for us.

Early Parenting Skills:

As babies swiftly transition into toddlers asserting their independence, Lisa emphasizes that it's never too early to work on your parenting skills. To aid this journey, Lisa's community, Happy Families, is launching a free Positive Parenting Program in February. This program, based on five fundamental principles, aims to equip parents with the tools needed to navigate the challenges of raising children.

The 5 Principles of Positive Parenting:

        1. Taking care of yourselves as parents - Self-care, me too!

        2. Have realistic expectations of yourself and the children.

        3. Creating a Safe & Interesting Environment for your children.

        4. Fostering a Positive Learning Environment that embraces continuous learning and growth.

        5. Using Assertive Discipline - Discipline means to teach.

Lisa highlights the importance of having a plan in place for handling behaviour challenges, which can emerge rapidly after infancy. Parents, often sleep-deprived, find themselves navigating the unpredictable chaos of family life.

In the journey of parenthood, self-care is a crucial life skill. Lisa's guidance encourages parents to embrace this concept, creating a positive ripple effect on the entire family. Ditch the stress, hatch a plan, and remember, it starts with us – by prioritizing self-care, we lay the groundwork for a fulfilling and balanced family life.
