Baby Hips Screening
Baby Hips Screening
The wonder of being a new mother is a unique experience that teaches you many things that may have never crossed your mind. From the baby’s types of cries, to the feeding process, changing diapers, first time falling ill, first roll over etc. One of the many great things to learn is how to keep your baby growing in a healthy way with no obstacles.
At birth, a paediatrician can check baby’s hips by clinical examination. But, more than half of the hips at birth with normal findings can be less developed. If the hips are less developed, and legs are kept fully extended in a tight swaddle, they can dislocate over time, and be diagnosed late. Late diagnosis means longer treatment and more complications.

To prevent this from happening, the best way is to check the babies’ hips by ultrasonography, soon after the birth, and follow the advice given by doctor. This is something we have been doing at Mediclinic Al Jowhara Hospital for more than five years.
Even if the hips are good, babies should be swaddled in a way where the legs are left out for full movement. That way you can provide the best environment for your baby’s hip growth.
